To become a citizen of Malta through investment, you must meet certain requirements:
- First, you must buy a property worth at least €690,000 or invest in a rental property with an annual rent of more than €16,000. The property must be rented for at least five years.
- Second, you must contribute to the Country Fund. The amount you contribute determines how quickly you can apply for citizenship. For example, if you invest €600 thousand, you can apply for citizenship in three years. If you invest €750 thousand, you can apply in one year.
- You must also make a charitable contribution to a non-governmental organization in Malta. The minimum amount is €10 thousand. Investments in real estate are repayable.
That means you can sell the property after five years with a profit.
The process of becoming a citizen through investment is different from the usual way. You don't have to meet all the usual conditions. You just need to get a residence permit, show an official medical certificate that you don't have any infectious diseases, and prove that the investor is reliable.
If you do all of these things, you and your family can legally stay in the country. The family members that the investor can list when applying for citizenship include:
- Spouse.
- Children under the age of 29 who are unmarried and supported by the investor.
- Relatives over the age of 55 (e.g. grandparents) who are dependent on the investor.
